Kast als roomdevider

Zoals beloofd een paar foto's van de servieskast overdwars in de kamer. Het leuke hieraan vind ik dat je er twee woongedeeltes mee creeert en dat vind ik ZO gezellig. Net als oude (brocante) tijden... ;) 

Ben benieuwd wat jullie vinden!

As promised, here are a few photo's of the curious cabinet, set perpendicular to the wall in the room. What I really like about it is that you create two living rooms and I think that is SO cozy.
Just like the olden days...=) I'm curious what y'all think of it!

Het was wel even een verassing voor manlief toen ik -heel lief natuurlijk- vroeg of hij me even wilde helpen de kast overdwars te zetten. Je zal maar een vrouw hebben die elke keer weer inspiratie heeft om van alles te veranderen! Gelukkig is hij altijd heel bereidwillig een handje te helpen. (Als we het maar tactisch vragen en beloven iets lekkers voor hem te maken kom je 'n heel eind..en hij weet hoe GELUKKIG ik ervan word;) 

Daar bof ik maar weer mee. 

It was definitely a suprise for my hubby when I -- very sweetly of course [alarm bells went off] -- asked if he'd help me for just a minute to move the cabinet. I had just laid down to read a very interesting book after a long day's work and then my wife gets all inspired, not to bake a cake or something like that, but to redecorate for the umpteenth time! My halo wasn't shining. But I forget that I'm supposed to be translating. Fortunately, he is always very willing to lend a helping hand (with or without the halo). A tactfully [tactically?] posed question with a promise to cook a tasty treat brings you a long way. And he knows how DELIGHTED this makes me. I'm just very fortunate. [Warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream sounds nice ... the promise of the treat was a welcome addition to this story.]

De antieke boekjes kreeg ik van een lief vriendinnetje. Bedankt lieve Naomi! Ik ben er reuze blij mee.

Dit servies moet je misschien van houden maar ik ben er gek op. Op en top brocante, helemaal uit de USA.. nog van Rapp's oma geweest... 

Perhaps you have to have a thing for china, but I'm crazy about it. Completely antique, all the way from the USA, they're from Rapp's grandma.

Het mandje hieronder is gevuld met oude lakentjes uit de tijd van mijn moeder.

 Die moest nog wel even wit geverfd worden...

It did have to be painted white... [suprise, surprise.]

 Ook de spiegel kreeg een white-wash verfje over zich heen. (Tot groot verdriet van manlief, die vond het hout mooier..., sorry schatje!) Het werd geverfd met verdunde krijtwit verf en flink nageschuurd. Wat me een fikse blaar bezorgde. Maar dat hebben we er allemaal voor over. 

The mirror also had to be whitewashed, much to the dismay of my hubby, who thought the wood was better looking..., sorry, honey!) It was painted with chalky paint and then sanded down. What cost me a burning blister. But that just goes with the territory. 

Van de week kreeg het lampenkapje op de schoorsteen een nieuw handgemaakt lampenrokje. Genaaid van een oud lakentje...

This week the lampshade on the mantle received a new handmade dress. [It's glowing with delight...] Sewed from an old cloth...

En tja... het was je misschien al opgevallen.. maar ook de salonkist kreeg een white-wash doorgeschuurde laag. Ik ben helemaal in m'n sas met het resultaat. Kan er niets aan doen, maar ik houd nu eenmaal van WIT, vooral met het komende voorjaar. En dan wel gecombineerd met zachte roze, blauwe en mintgroene pasteltinten. Daar krijg ik zo'n heerlijk voorjaarsgevoel van. En aangezien het weer nog niet echt voorjaarsachtig is, brengen we het voorjaar vast naar binnen. 

And yes, perhaps you'd already noticed, but my wife promised she hadn't written so much, but she seems to be waxing eloquent. Apologies, dear reader. Even the "coffeechest" got a sanded layer of white was. I'm tickled pink with the result. I just can't help it, but I simply love WHITE, especially with the approaching spring. And then combined with light pink, blue, mint green pastels. Feelings of spring just well up within me. And considering that the weather is not yet exactly gushing with the feelings of spring, we're letting spring get a running start indoors.

Even wat anders maar hieronder zie je een foto van onze -geloof het of niet- nieuwe kat. Onze naaktkat wel te verstaan. Die staat model in de hal. Ik kreeg em van de buurvrouw cadeau en het idee was om hem aan te kleden. Maar ik vind em leuker in z'n nakie. Dus helaas voor de kat :)  

And now on another note, below you will see a foto of our [my wife's]--believe it or not--new cat. Our naked cat, to be clear. He is sitting in the hall. I got him from our neighborlady as a gift, and the idea was to dress him up. But I like his birthday suit much better. Poor cat...

Keuken / Kitchen

Allereerst wil ik iedereen bedankten voor de leuke, positieve reacties elke keer. Alle nieuwe volgers, hartelijke welkom. Leuk dat jullie een kijkje nemen op mijn blog. 

First of all, I would like to thank everyone for their nice responses to the posts. To all the new readers, welcome! It's nice that you're taking a look at my blog. 

Manlief kon laatst een broodbakmachine bestellen als kerstgeschenk van zijn werk. Maar ik wist niet of dit wel wat voor mij was.. Ik wilde het liefst een broodbakmachine een aantal weken op proef. Gelukkig heb ik een lieve zus die daaraan wilde meewerken.

Recently, my dear husband got to order a bread machine for a Christmas present from his work. But at first, I wasn't really sure if this were really something for me. I wanted the opportunity to use a machine for a few weeks, to test if I'd like it. Fortunately, I have a sweet sister who could provide this chance.

 En ja.. ik moet zeggen.. het bevalt uitstekend! Het is niet alleen lekkerder maar ook nog eens gezonder. En het ruikt heerlijk in huis naar vers gebakken brood tijdens het bakken. Dus wat wil je nog meer.. 

And yes, I must say, it is working out excellently! It is not only tastier, but also healthier. And the fragrances of freshly baked bread are wonderful! What more could you want...

Natuurlijk was het ook nog een dilemma of ik wel zo'n groot lelijk gevaarte in mijn keuken wil..

Maar het valt wel mee. Ik heb er een gehaakt kleedje overheen gedaan. Zo vind ik het best acceptabel. 

Of course, it was also a dilemma whether or not I would want such a big ugly colossus in my kitchen. But it's not too bad. I've laid a lace cover over it, which makes it acceptable.

Een paar hoekjes van mijn keuken.

Hierboven het ronde houten ding is een handgemaakt kruidenbord. Het was een kerstgeschenk van de buurtzorg waar ik sinds kort werk als wijkverpleegkundige.

The round wooden circle is a handmade case for herb storage. It was a Christmas gift from the home health company, where I've recently begun working as a neighborhood nurse. (And what did we do with the spice case ... we emptied it of all the spices and put them in glass jars. This was, of course, very logical.) 

Ik ben altijd aan het schuiven en veranderen in mijn huis en zo ook in mijn keuken. Het gaat gewoon vanzelf, ik vind het heerlijk dat freubelen in mijn huisje. Vaak als manlief thuis komt van zijn werk vraagt hij: 'wat heb je nu weer veranderd?' Gelukkig vind hij het allemaal prima, zolang het maar niet teveel geld kost ;)

I'm always moving things around and changing things in my house, so is it also in my kitchen. It just happens on its own, I love piddling around in my house. Often if my husband comes home from work, he asks, "And what have you changed now?" Fortunately, he's pretty easy going, as long as it doesn't cost too much money.=) 

Manlief keek laatst wel een beetje verbaasd toen ik vroeg of hij even wilde helpen de grote kast in de woonkamer te verschuiven. De arme man is nog maar net gewend aan het ene of vrouwlief krijgt het weer op haar heupen en dan wordt de hele boel weer omgegooid. We hebben de grote kast overdwars gezet in de kamer en hiermee twee woongedeeltes gecreeerd. Manlief moest 'even wennen' maar is uiteindelijk ook helemaal tevreden met het resultaat.

My dear husband [and this time he really was dear!] looked not a little surprised when I asked if he would help me "for a minute" [dear husband knew it wouldn't be "for a minute"] to move the large cupboard. The poor man has just gotten used to one thing and then dear wife [words of writer, not translator] gets a big idea to turn the world upside down. We set the large cupboard perpendicular to the wall, thereby creating two rooms. My hubby had to get used to things, but is finally completely satisfied with the result. [The alternative? Moving everything back...]

Nieuw hoekje

Aangezien Job niet meer in de box zit, is de box zo snel mogelijk verbannen zodat er weer een gezellig hoekje gemaakt kon worden. Want dat kan ik nooit laten als het even kan... 

Het hoekje onder de trap wordt vaak vergeten of niet gebruikt, maar het is een prima plek gebleken voor een bureau/werkplek. Om te knutselen en naaien, voor de laptop, tutten voor de spiegel, om te tekenen of kaarten te schrijven enz.enz.

Since Job doesn't play in the box anymore, the box was exiled as quickly as possible to make room for a cozy corner. That's just something I can't resist. [I'm not sure that resistance has actually ever been attempted.]

The corner beneath the stairs is often forgotten or left unused, but it's turned out to be a great place for a desk/work area to do crafts, sew, for the computer, primping before the mirror, to draw or write cards, etc. 

De houten trein heeft Job van opa en oma Crook gehad. Handmade gemaakt helemaal uit Ohio!

The wooden train was given to Job by Grandpa and Grandma Crook. Handmade, all the way from Ohio!

Salontafel

Het is weer een nieuw jaar en dus... tijd voor een nieuwe salontafel. Ik was op zoek naar iets stoers. 

Dit werd het, ik ben er helemaal mee in m'n sas.

It's a new year which means it's time for a new coffee table. [I didn't know coffee tables were connected to the calendar. I'm curious to find out what else is!] I was searching for something with character.
This is it, I'm really happy with it.

Het werd een echte russische legerkist. Met ook nog veel opbergruimte erin, handig. Mijn slimme mannetje kon met zijn briljante taalkennis ook nog de tekst op de kist ontcijferen. Er blijken o.a. kogelvrije vesten ingezeten te hebben. Leuk om te weten, toch? :)

It's a real Russian army chest. With lots of storage room, very convenient. My smart and handsome man was able to decode the writing on the chest [and, more pertinently, the proof of delivery within]. It turns out that the chest was used to transport bullet proof vests. Nice to know, eh? [Sometimes I think I'd rather have the vests.=)]

Christmas & Winter may come!

In huize Crook wordt er naar hartelust voorbereid voor de kerst en winter. 

Hier alvast wat kerst/winterhoekjes om in de stemming te komen....

At the Crook's home we are already preparing for winter and Christmas.

Heerlijk gezellig deze hertenkop... 

I love this deer-head... 

Ik heb het kerstboompje heel simpel gehouden. Het boompje is al zo mooi van zichzelf. 

Straks krijgt hij een plekje in de tuin heb ik hem beloofd...:)

I kept the Christmas-tree simple. The little tree has it's beauty of it's own. 

I promised him a place in the garden later this year... :)

 Hieronder nog een sfeerhoekje voor de winter. Het lampenkapje kreeg voor de gelegenheid een andere bekleding van jute en kant. 

Under here another atmosphere corner for winter-time. The lampshade has been renewed with burlap and lace.
